Microdermabrasion is a facial procedure that uses manual exfoliation to remove the outer layers of the skin. It stimulates the production of new skin cells and collagen and is less aggressive than laser resurfacing. The process works in a series to achieve the best results.
Here at Enhance Your Beauty we use a diamond tipped wand to abrade the surface of your skin. Diamond Microdermabrasion machines come with wands of varying size and coarseness for different skin types and depths of resurfacing. The wand tip is made of natural laser cut diamond chips which polish the skin and remove dead cells, which are then vacuumed back into the waste filter. Many professionals prefer natural diamond tips as they are easier to control and don’t irritate the skin and are less likely to trigger adverse reactions.
Frequently Asked Questions about Microdermabrasion
What happens in a treatment?
Your skin will first be double cleansed with a cleanser suitable for your skin type. The treatment is then followed with the microdermabrasion wand smoothly over your skin and a suitable skin specific mask is then applied followed by serum, moisturiser and sunscreen to help nourish and protect the skin. The treatment takes 35-45 minutes.
What will Microdermabrasion do for my skin?
Overall, microdermabrasion can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, remove acne scars, clear up blackheads, minimise the size of the pores, reduce sun damage and even out the skin tone. Microdermabrasion also helps to boost collagen production to provide firming and toning to the complexion. 100% mineral makeup can be applied to the skin after the treatment.
Is there any downtime after treatment?
Microdermabrasion is a safe and gentle procedure with no downtime. The client will need to protect their skin with moisturiser and sunscreen for 48 hours after the treatment and may experience mild redness and sloughing/peeling. However the client can return to work immediately, making microdermabrasion a popular ‘lunchtime’ treatment.
How many microdermabrasion treatments do I need?
For most clients microdermabrasion shows an immediate improvement, however a course of 3 to 6 treatments are recommended for optimum results. These initial 3 to 6 treatments can be spaced one week apart and then continued as a monthly treatment for maintenance and to sustain the effect.
How does microdermabrasion work on the skin? (The science)
The thickness of the epidermis is increased because new cells are being produced more rapidly and the cells themselves are larger and healthier. The cells of the lower layers of the epidermis are more ‘knitted’ together unlike the surface layer which is in a haphazard arrangement. The barrier function of the top layer- (epidermis), is disrupted for 24-48 hours causing the skin to be drier than usual. During the cell reproduction, of the cells, the fibroblasts that make up the collagen fibres are increased and are thicker, more tightly packed and more organised. The number of elastin fibres are increased and they are orientated vertically instead of horizontally giving the dermal layer (second layer of the skin) more spring thus making the appearance of the skin more fresh and younger looking.
What results can I expect?
Depending on the area treated, you will notice an improvement in your skins appearance, after treatment. Stretch marks and acne scars will be less obvious. Age spots and fine lines are reduced and the skin is visibly tighter, softer and smoother.
This effect is temporary as new cells are being produced daily so therefore a course of treatments is recommended initially followed by monthly maintenance treatments to sustain the effect.
Is microdermabrasion good for acne scarring?
By removing the top layer of the skin, professional microdermabrasion diminishes or even removes superficial acne scarring. Deeper acne scarring requires a more invasive procedure, such as a chemical peel and/or skin needling.
